Volunteer

Want to feel incredibly appreciated and help our local kids?

Do you have flexibility to volunteer a few hours a few times this year?

Then come join us!

We are always in need of both medical and non-medical volunteers!

Volunteer Requirements

  1. Current Durham Public Schools (DPS) background check. This is free and takes just a few minutes to submit online.

  2. Email proof of COVID-19 vaccination (picture of most recent vaccination card).

  3. If you have a medical license, please email a copy of it as well.

Volunteer orientation will be done at the beginning of each event (HIPAA review, screening(s) refresher, any other event-specific guidelines).

Volunteer Roles

  • Vision screening

    • Medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to perform vision screenings (reading the big "E" on the chart). This is in partnership with Durham Tech's Project Sight, which brings mobile eye exams and no-cost eyeglasses to those who need them. Volunteers for this role may be performing multiple tasks, including doing the vision screening, helping with registration, and more.

  • Sports physicals

    • Medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to offer mobile sports physicals to middle and high school students in Durham County. In partnership with Durham Tech's Mobile Health Lab, the clinic can be brought directly to community groups and schools to provide free sports physicals for an afternoon or morning.

How to Sign Up

There are just a few steps to begin volunteering with us!

  1. Register as a volunteer with Durham Public Schools so they can complete a background check (choose the "Register to Volunteer" menu option). This is required for volunteers working with community groups as well. The registration lasts for 1 year, so if you have registered within the past year you should be set. Call DPS at 919-560-2000 if you have any issues registering. This takes 2 to 4 weeks to process, so please do this as soon as possible. If you think you have a current background check, but can't find the email confirmation, try searching for "EAS access" in your email.

  2. Once you have received email confirmation of approval as a DPS volunteer, forward that email to volunteer@comvmc.org

  3. Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination - email a copy of your vaccine record to volunteer@comvmc.org. If you have a medical license, please share a copy of that as well.

Once  the volunteer coordinator has received your background check confirmation and COVID vaccine documentation, then you will receive information on signing up for shifts. Email volunteer@comvmc.org if you have questions.
